Card Security Online
Bridget N. from Jenkintown, PA wrote:
"I want to order, but I'm afraid to use my credit card online. I hear about online problems with cards but I'm not sure of the whole story. Should I just not ever use my card on the Internet?"
Bridget, you are correct that any transactions require careful and confidential handling. This is especially true online where things can seem scary and buyer confidence is not high. Rest assured that we have taken appropriate measures to safeguard the security of data submitted online. When you submit your credit card to our site, all account identifying information is secured over a 128-bit encrypted connection. You will know when you are on a secured web site when it starts with "https://" instead of "http://" (the 's' stands for secure).
With that said, the real issue today about online credit card fraud does not stem from the card owner (such as yourself) using their cards online. Credit card fraud over the Internet happens when someone has *already* stolen your account information by some other means and is able to place orders online (i.e., not face to face with a clerk) using that previously stolen information. The risk here for the card owner is simply just owning a card, not using one online.
Personally restricting your own use of your own card online only stops you from making a purchase you want to make. This won't stop criminals who have already stolen your card information from making purchases.
However, Ascentive also addresses this problem by using AVS an (address verification system), by requiring the CVV2 number on the back of the card, and by recording the purchasers' IP and network address information during the order process. When you place an order with us online, our third-party authorizing service works directly with your credit card company to verify the order information and turn down any bad data or suspicious-looking information.
And lastly, studies have shown that it is actually much safer to use your credit card online than in person. The reason for this is that the entire process is fully automated (no human involvement). This means that no dishonest clerk, waitress, or callcenter representative ever sees your account information. If no one can see it, no one can steal it.
